It seems like just yesterday I started working as a real estate agent here on Hatteras Island! I continue to serve my clients that I started with even now...I'm your REALTOR for life! Fast forward 23 years to today...and I still enjoy helping folks buy and sell this slice of east coast paradise.
Originally from the Tidewater area of Virginia, Portsmouth to be exact, my family, like many others from Virginia, discovered the less crowded beaches just a short drive away in North Carolina. My childhood vacations were spent on the Outer Banks beaches with my mom, dad, sisters, cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents. My fondest memories are the ones where rwe played all day long in the water and wore zinc on our faces to prevent sunburns. Today, my extended family still gathers at the beach each year for good times and lots of laughs...and maybe some waves too.
I moved down to the beach for "just the summer" in 1989, and then I met my husband (who had migrated similarly from Ohio) that May at a bonfire on the beach, just north of the Rodanthe pier...and that's the beginning of how I became smitten with the boy and the island. I loved the small town feel of the place and people; I was staying. We ended up getting married, building a house, and raising our son, Johnny, here on this island and never regretted not going back to a city life.

My working life in the 90s centered mainly on property management and retail giving me a good backbone of experience to draw from when I transitioned into sales in 2000. John and I acted as our own contractors when we built our house, and we did the bulk of the work ourselves. I wore a nail belt when I wasn't at the office, and 11 months later, we were living in our dream. Talk about sweat equity...! If I never finish another piece of drywall in my life, it won't hurt my feelings.

Today, I still enjoy the beach as much as possible whether it's dipping in the ocean or taking the truck for a drive in the 4WD accesses. I also enjoy my young adult surf the waves like I could never dream of doing; he has salt water in his veins.I never get bored introducing people my place and showing them all the fascinating secrets that a beach has to offer.

Another sweet thing about the Outer Banks is its community. It's what holds this place together in times whether good or bad. I'm proud to be a part of it. I think it is one of the reasons so many people from around the country want to be a part of our unique coastal environment...the vibe. I invite you to experience it for yourselves!

I have had some fun on my real estate journey. Maybe you saw my Beachfront Bargain Hunt episode that aired February 2017 on HGTV (I'm still in the reruns...!) The show really gave a wonderful depiction of Hatteras Island...but, fans of the island already know this is a special place.
