Avon is the center of Hatteras Island. It is considered the largest and the busiest town on Hatteras Island. It is located south of sizable stretch of undeveloped Cape Hatteras National Shore. Avon was historically known as Kinnakeet. The post office changed the name to Avon in 1883. Today’s main attractions are: surfing, biking, shopping and numerous art galleries. South of Avon is island’s most popular kiteboarding and windsurfing spots.
